Pastor Alan has been Senior Pastor at Trinity since August, 2015. Previously, he served with his wife, Phyllis, at congregations in Florida (1999-2015), Iowa (1991-1999) and North Dakota (1986-1991). He was drawn to Trinity by the congregation’s commitment to urban ministry, its rich worship and music, its living history, and the love and openness of its members.
Pastors Alan and Phyllis have been married for 40 years and have three children and three grandchildren: Adam (an IT professional for St. Jude’s Medical) and his wife Kathryn live in Plymouth, Minnesota with their three children, Carter (8), Leah (6) and Eli (4); Rachel and her husband Boaz were married last year and live in State College, Pennsylvania where Rachel is a professor in the College of Education at Penn State; Nathan lives in the Tampa, Florida area, where he teaches fifth grade at an environmentally focused charter school.
Pastor Alan comes from a family of Lutheran pastors: his grandfather, father, two uncles and a brother have all served in ordained ministry. His parents live in California and Indiana and he is the oldest of seven children. Most of his extended family lives in California.
The Wolkenhauers enjoy travel and have led two congregational trips to Germany (with side trips to Austria and France) and a trip to the Holy Land, as well as youth trips to Mexico and the Colorado Rockies. They hope to travel to Italy in 2017 in celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary. They love taking long walks, exploring new places and cooking. Pastor Alan enjoys listening to a great variety of music and reading good mysteries, as well as books on travel and history.
One of Pastor Alan’s favorite Bible passages, which informs his ministry, is First John 4:7. “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” He feels privileged to be able to share God’s love and grace with the people of Trinity and the community of Reading.
