Pastor Alan has been Senior Pastor at Trinity since August, 2015. Previously, he served with his wife, Phyllis, at congregations in Florida (1999-2015), Iowa (1991-1999) and North Dakota (1986-1991). He was drawn to Trinity by the congregation’s commitment to urban ministry, its rich worship and music, its living history, and the love and openness of its members.
Pastors Alan and Phyllis have been married for over 40 years and have three children and five grandchildren: Adam (an IT professional for Abbot Labs) and his wife Kathryn live in Plymouth, Minnesota with their three children, Carter (11), Leah (8) and Eli (6); Rachel, her husband Boaz and their one-year-old twins Aden and Ethan, live in State College, where Rachel and Boaz serve on the Penn State faculty; Nathan lives in the Tampa, Florida area, and works at the University of South Florida’s Instructional Technology Department.
Pastor Alan comes from a family of Lutheran pastors: his grandfather, father, two uncles and a brother have all served in ordained ministry. His parents live in California and Indiana and he is the oldest of seven children. Most of his extended family lives in California.
The Wolkenhauers enjoy travel and have led two congregational trips to Germany (with side trips to Austria and France) and a trip to the Holy Land, as well as youth trips to Mexico and the Colorado Rockies. They love taking long walks, exploring new places and cooking. Pastor Alan enjoys listening to a great variety of music and reading good mysteries, as well as books on travel and history.
One of Pastor Alan’s favorite Bible passages, which informs his ministry, is First John 4:7. “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” He feels privileged to be able to share God’s love and grace with the people of Trinity and the community of Reading.
