Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
-Matthew 11:28-30
You’re back already? How was your sabbatical?
Believe it or not, I still hear these sentences, albeit primarily from people whom I infrequently encounter. It’s a great question because it brings me back to the months of May-July when I spent intentional time focusing on curiosity, creativity, connection, and renewal. This time of sabbath was a true gift that not many rostered leaders receive. I am grateful to our congregation, vestry, and staff for allowing me this time to restore my soul and relationship with God and others. I will be officially sharing my sabbatical presentation on Sunday, November 17 during the Sunday Forum time at 9:00 a.m. For those who are unable to attend, I hope to have it recorded so it can be seen on our Trinity YouTube channel at any time.
Jesus modeled the importance of finding rest from everyday life. He sought times of solitude and prayer with God, as well as taking time to be fully present with his friends, family, and community to eat and celebrate. As we enter the month of Thanksgiving and turn our faces to the holiday season, it is my prayer that you each find places of sabbath amidst the hustle and bustle. Consider using the Advent devotional book and attending our “Take a Breath” Advent Event on December 1.
Sharing Christ’s Service,
Dcs. Deborah
