When Trinity began dreaming about Annex renovations, one idea was to include the installation of a shower. As we spoke to community partners, including the Berks Coalition to End Homelessness (BCEH), we determined that a mobile shower trailer would make a greater impact on our community by reaching beyond downtown Reading. With Trinity’s initial pledge of $30,000 and additional gifts from Atonement Lutheran, West Berks Mission District, and West Lawn United Methodist Church, Refresh Berks is now an independent 501c3 organization. Our logo was designed by Kristen Opalinski. The current board, led by Amy Stewart-Himes, includes several members of Trinity and representatives from Common Ground Recovery Community, BCEH, West Lawn Methodist, and WBMD.
Thanks to Senator Judy Schwank, we received a grant that made it possible to purchase the shower trailer and truck. We are making connections with Berks Community Health Center, Tower Health, and New Journey Community Outreach. We also are seeking sponsors to ensure sustainability for years to come.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 17 at noon. We will have a kickoff “Splash” at West Lawn United Methodist Church, showcasing the trailer, thanking current sponsors, and inviting others to join in the work of providing safe, clean showers for people all around Berks County.
